Harvard Universitiy's Center on the Developing Child explains that genes provide the basic blueprint, but experiences shape the process that determines whether a child's brain will provide a strong or weak foundation for all future learning behavior and health. The Beaverton Civic Theatre's Young Audience series captures the opportunity to help children have an experience that enhances their reading development. The Oregon Department of Education's Early Learning Division features Beaverton Civic Theatre's Young Audience series as a Brain Building resource to parents and caregivers.
Arts education, specifically drama, is strongly tied to early literacy, language development, reading, and writing for children prior to formal education and continuing through middle school. According to multiple research studies there is a direct correlation between seeing a dramatization and a child's ability to comprehend the text and understand content. Inspired by these findings, Beaverton Civic Theatre works closely with the Beaverton City Library Youth Services Division to identify plays that will introduce families to reading material that engages children with developmentally appropriate texts.
Through performance and interactive lobby displays, Beaverton Civic Theatre's Young Audience series provides families with an experience featuring all five early literacy practices, read, write, sing, talk, and play! We are proud to keep this program accessible for families to enjoy theatre together by keeping the ticket price for all Theatre for Young Audience performances $5 for all ages.
