Scene Study

Fundamentals of Acting

Group Vocal Lesson

Everyone can sing, it's just a matter of finding your voice! Focus on learning the physiology of your instrument and then using it to create the best sound you can.

Creating Costumes

Continuation of Intro to Improv...this hour provides an opportunity to put to use the techniques learned in the 7PM Intro to Improv class.  Intro to Improv is a required prerequisite.

Storytelling

Finding Character in Your Body

Stage Combat

Expand your toolkit and spice up any show by learning the basics of choreographed violence. Learn to safely act out punches, falls, grapples, kicks and sword strikes.

Meet The Instructors

Jacob Alexander
Classes: 
Scene Study, Auditioning- Monologues, Fundamentals of Acting
Jacob is an actor and educator in the Portland area. He currently works as a Teaching Artist at Northwest Children's Theater and School (NWCT), where he also assists in many other departments, including box office, front of house and outreach. Before perusing theatre full-time, Jacob worked in environmental education as an Environmental Education Director at the Tualatin Hills Nature Park. He has performed with a variety of theatre companies in the Portland area, including NWCT, Joy and Wonder Theatre, PDX Playwrights, Original Practice Shakespeare Festival (OPS Fest), and with Beaverton Civic Theatre in The Diary of Anne Frank (as Peter Van Daan) and Beauty and the Beast: Concert Edition (as Bookseller/Ensemble). Beyond studying for his Associate of Arts degree at Portland Community College, Jacob is a graduate of NWCT's Interns NW advanced training program and is current apprentice with OPS Fest for their Summer 2019 season of shows.  ​

Amanda Clark
​Classes: Finding Character in Your Body, Creating Character, 
Mastering the Cold Read Audition
Amanda believes that every person has the ability to be an engaging story teller! She has been appearing onstage for many years and holds a degree in Acting from Ball State University where she trained in creating authentic and grounded performances. She has worked with many local theatre companies onstage and recently directed Almost, Maine for Beaverton Civic Theatre.

Jenny Cyphers

Creating Costumes
Jenny Cyphers is the technical director for Beaverton Civic Theatre. Jenny earned a BA in dance, studied technical theatre, and taught dance classes for years. Theater combines many things she loves, art, making things, costumes, historical trivia, and social commentary. She gets to do all of these things while working with talented volunteers that make up the BCT "family".

Lalanya Gunn

Creating Character, 
The 7 Levels of Tension
Lalanya has worked for over 25 years in the theater industry. Hailing from Buffalo, NY, she holds a BFA in theatre from Niagara University and has been trained on other techniques including Meisner, Groundlings Improv and Character workshops. She has worked on stages in Buffalo, Austin, Los Angeles and Portland. She has worked with local companies including Portland Center Stage, Lakewood Theatre, Broadway Rose, Bag & Baggage, to name a few, and Beaverton Civic Theatre, where she won a Civie Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Willamina Fleming in Silent Sky.

Alli Halley
​Classes: 
Musical Theatre Dance
Theater has been a major part of Alli Halley’s life but it wasn't until her freshman year in college that she pursued dance and instantly fell in love. She combined her love for theater and dance when she was asked to choreograph Linfield College's production of Spring Awakening and in doing so, found a new calling. After graduating, Alli pursued auditions for Annie at Beaverton Civic Theatre and was asked to help with choreography. Since then, she's volunteered for multiple BCT productions as crew and is so excited and thankful to have an opportunity to teach dance one again!

Les Ico
Classes: Intro to Improv, Improv Play
Les Ico has been improvising most of his life, but has been performing professionally with ComedySportz Portland since 2008. He would love to list the celebrities he's been on stage with, but he's afraid of a defamation lawsuit.

Amelia Michaels
​Classes: Storytelling
Amelia is a lifelong dancer and lover of stories. She holds a bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts and Dance from Hendrix College, and has taught theatre and dance camps for kids and teens in Seattle and New Orleans. Love for the arts can begin at any age, but she especially loves working with children and creating a space for them to explore, laugh, and discover.

Daniel Rhovan
​Classes: Storybuilding, Physical Acting, Stage Combat
Daniel Rhovan is a professional voice, film, and stage actor who has been teaching drama for three years. He grew up in the tiny town of Triangle Lake, where he fell in love with the power of storytelling. He graduated with a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Eastern Oregon University, where he was trained in stage combat, music theater, Shakespeare, dance, script analysis, and the Meisner technique. Among his favorite accomplishments in the Portland area include writing and starring in a Western puppet show, being featured in a D&D webseries, and learning how to clap with one hand.

Erin Zelazny
​Classes: OBOB: Study Through Play, Group Vocal Lesson, Musical Theatre Audition
Erin studied English, psychology, and musical theater at Eastern Oregon University before graduating in 2010. For over a decade, she has studied vocal pedagogy and that, along with her degree in English discourse and own experience with anxiety and stage fright, has fostered a passion for helping others eliminate the stress and fear surrounding auditioning.  Erin believes that by creating safe and inclusive spaces, anyone can learn to sing, nail an audition, and build confidence both on and off stage.
